Grade 8

What Every Grade 8 Should Know

The SCITS community is dedicated to development of self-worth in its students. Working and learning in a traditional environment, they are motivated to acquire the basic skills and knowledge to become resourceful, self-directed, creative individuals, capable of adapting to an ever-changing world.

What does SCITS offer?

- traditions established since 1922
- nearly 1000 students, almost 200 entering Grade 9
- over 50 teachers
- auditorium
- swimming pool

SCITS was opened in 1922 as a standard bearer of the schools of the time, in that it had a swimming pool and an auditorium. It has produced a long line of the famous (or infamous) people of this area.

SCITS has a population of nearly 1000 students -- almost 200 of whom will be in Grade 9 next September.

The change from elementary school to a secondary school environment always has built into it a degree of nervousness and trepidation. No matter what your classmates may say, they too have the same feelings of anxiousness.

So, as a student, you should not feel that you are any different from any of your friends. This new situation has its benefits:
- new opportunities
- new friends
- new and different activities, and if necessary
- a chance for a fresh start.

In order to provide as much information as possible, to answer all the questions that may be lingering at this time, and to have as few surprises as possible in the fall when students reach secondary school, the following activities are planned for Grade 8 parents and students:
- elementary/secondary staff meeting
- counsellors visit elementary schools
- student registration forms
- parents' information sessions
- student option sheets completed
- students visit SCITS
- information letter with June report card

Early in September, there are more opportunities for parents to visit the school and meet each teacher and find out about course expectations.

Report cards are issued after about 6 or 7 weeks to provide feedback on the adjustment to secondary school.
