The SCITS Crest
The School CrestThe school crest has been around for quite some time. Though normally seen as an outline in traditional SCITS duotone blue and white school colours, you can see a full colour model to the right. SymbolismAt the top of the crest, the letters SCI&TS stand for Sarnia Collegiate Institute & Technical School, and the numerals 1922 are a reminder of the year the school was officially opened. The colours blue and white are used as they are our school colours, and represent the two main bodies of water near Sarnia -- Lake Huron, and the St. Clair River. On the left of the crest, a compass and set square are crossed to represent some of the trades that can be learned at a Technical School, such as construction and architecture. As traditional symbols, these tools also represent the passions of the heart, and the solid judgement of morals and virtues. These are pictured below an open book which symbolizes learning. On the right of the crest appears the contents of the crest of the Province of Ontario -- a sprig of three gold maples leaves symbolizing Canada, and the Cross of St. George, symbolizing England. Sarnia Collegiate was one of only 12 or so original high schools in the entire Province of Ontario. The colour green is used to symbolize growth, and the rich agriculture in the area. At the bottom of the crest, is a tree representing knowledge and growth. At each side of the tree is a beaver (castor canadensis), a symbol of the sovereignty of Canada, and a symbol of our local aboriginal heritage. Below these symbols are the numerals 1851, which was the year the first Sarnia grammar school was opened (from which SCI&TS was born). Below the crest is placed a scroll with the school motto: Sic Itur Ad Astra, which is Latin for "Reach for the stars." Written and re-drawn by Mr. Courtney, 2007. |
